What is a Multipotentialite?
According to Emilie Wapnick: A multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life, she says:
‘Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do. Being a multipotentialite is our destiny. We have many paths and we pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).
Multipotentialites thrive on learning, exploring, and mastering new skills. We are excellent at bringing disparate ideas together in creative ways. This makes us incredible innovators and problem solvers.
When it comes to new interests that emerge, our insatiable curiosity leads us to absorb everything we can get our hands on. As a result, we pick up new skills fast and tend to be a wealth of information.’
I believe many Empaths will resonate with being a multipotentialite for the simple fact we love to learn and master new skills.
Becoming skilled in many jobs is normal for Empaths. They are good at most things they are drawn to. If they are forced to do something that holds no interest, they likely won’t do well in such tasks.
If a multipotentialite Empath child is made to do schoolwork they find boring, they will not excel at it. They may find all studies presented by the system un-engaging and therefore not fare well in their education. This will create a belief they are no good at anything. The truth is they were not sufficiently stimulated by the work.
As a child I did not enjoy school. There was very little about it that pressed my buttons. This was not because I did not want to learn. I love learning and gaining knowledge. But I did not want to learn about what I considered to be unnecessary to life. I also knew when the teachers did not enjoy their job by the way they taught (although I did not realize it at the time). If they were disinterested in what they were teaching, then there was no way I could be engaged by it. I still find it a shame the way the education system works. It serves but a handful. We are all unique but taught the same.
We live in a society that expects us to find one vocational path and stick to it for life. This may make those who want to change careers feel guilty or wrong. Being trapped in work they dislike becomes imprisoning to everyone, not just the Empath.
For some, being in the same job throughout their life is “heaven on a plate”. But this path is not for everyone. Some of us need to keep changing, keep learning, and keep moving forward. And we have to know it is ok to do this. Because Empaths feel others’ judgments, it may hold them back from trying careers in which they are interested. They don’t want to be judged for being flaky or inconsistent for trying one job after another.
Like many others, I believed I studied different subjects and professions because I was looking for my “one true calling”, believing I had not yet found my path.
